What is baked spaghetti pie?
Baked spaghetti pie is an old-timey recipe that I found long ago in a church cookbook. Trust me, some of the best recipes in the world are to be found in church cookbooks, as these recipes are submitted by seasoned cooks. They know all the family-friendly recipes!
In short, baked spaghetti pie is a spaghetti casserole dish that is taken to the next level with some added ingredients.
What is the secret to good spaghetti sauce?
There are two ways to make the sauce for this baked spaghetti. The easiest way is to use jarred sauce, and my favorite is hands-down Rao’s marinara.
The second way is to use homemade spaghetti sauce. I love to make my spaghetti meat sauce ahead and freeze it, so I have it ready to go whenever I want to make this dish. If you don’t have a homemade meat sauce recipe that you love, bookmark this one! The key to this recipe is that it’s made in the slow cooker. Cooking the sauce long, low, and slow in a Crockpot makes all the difference! Whenever I’ve tried to make this sauce on the stovetop, it never tastes quite the same.

What ingredients are in baked spaghetti pie?
To make baked spaghetti with cheese, here are the ingredients to have on hand:
- 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
- 12 ounces spaghetti pasta
- 4 TB butter
- 1/2 cup freshly grated parmesan
- 2 eggs
- 2 (28-oz) jar pasta sauce
- 2 lbs. ground chuck

How do you make baked spaghetti pie?
To bake your spaghetti pie to perfection, you’ll make it in three different sections–the meat sauce, spaghetti crust, and the cheese sauce. After making each of these mixtures, you’ll simply layer and bake. More detailed instructions are in the recipe card at the bottom of this blog post.
Meat Sauce
If you’re not making homemade meat sauce, you’ll first need to brown the ground beef. Drain and sprinkle with garlic salt. Add the jarred pasta sauce and Italian seasoning. Then, stir well.
Spaghetti Crust
Boil your spaghetti noodles in a large pot of salted water until al dente (firm to the tooth). Drain the pasta and toss with butter until butter is melted. Add eggs and parmesan cheese, and toss until combined.
Cheese Sauce
In a large bowl, mix ricotta and cottage cheese together. Add Italian seasoning and stir.
What temperature do you bake spaghetti at?
Once you layer the ingredients in the baking dish, you’ll cover it with aluminum foil and place it in a 350°F oven for 45 minutes. Then, you’ll bake it uncovered until golden and bubbly.
After removing it from the oven, let the dish sit for at least 20 minutes before serving. However, I recommend waiting 30 minutes to an hour before serving to let the flavors settle.
Why are there so many cheeses in baked spaghetti?
The ricotta cheese adds moisture to the pasta and keeps it from drying out during baking. Mozzarella cheese adds the melted goodness that we love with the pasta sauce, and parmesan cheese adds sharp flavor and richness.
How do I make ahead and freeze baked spaghetti pie?
To freeze baked spaghetti pie, prepare the recipe up to the point of baking (but do not bake). Cover the dish (or dishes if you divide it into two) with freezer wrap. I wrap mine in heavy duty aluminum foil and also place in a large freezer bag. Be sure to label the bag with the date that you placed it in the freezer.
With how easy it is to make and freeze, this is the perfect dish to give to a loved one! One of my twin daughters just gave birth to my second grandbaby, and I made this very meal for them to keep in their freezer. All they have to do is reheat in the oven, slice, and enjoy!
