5 Ingredient Lemon Blueberry Dump Cake

|

This Lemon Blueberry Dump Cake is absolutely scrumptious! It requires only five ingredients and will wow any crowd!

I recently made this Lemon Blueberry Dump Cake for some friends, and it was such a hit! It is a bright, buttery cross between a cobbler and a cake that you will love! It tastes delicious and has the most irresistible soft, gooey texture.

What Is a Dump Cake?

Many people say dump cakes originally became popular after World War II when boxed cake mixes first made their debut. Some people call them “sad” cakes because they fall during the baking process, so they don’t rise like a traditional cake. They are called dump cakes because they don’t require any mixing or extra bowls- you simply “dump” the ingredients into your baking dish and pop it straight into the oven!

What Is in This Lemon Blueberry Dump Cake Recipe?

I love a simple, easy dessert that will wow a crowd but won’t require me to spend hours in the kitchen! This recipe fits the bill because it only requires five simple ingredients. It comes together in mere minutes but tastes like it took as long to make as a traditional cake recipe! This recipe is made of fresh blueberries (frozen works great, too!), butter, sugar, lemon zest, and one box of lemon cake mix.

What Is the Secret Ingredient in This Cake?

The secret ingredient in any dump cake recipe is the box lemon cake mix! If you’ve been following along with Family Savvy for any amount of time, you’ve probably gathered that I love “doctoring” up a cake box mix to make it taste homemade. The lemon cake mix makes this recipe so simple to make, and no one will ever suspect it wasn’t homemade. I’m including some of my most popular boxed cake recipes below!

Should I Use Fresh Fruit?

Many online recipes for dump cakes use canned pie fillings or fruit, but I truly think the fresh blueberries set this dish apart as summertime perfection! Of course, you could always eliminate the extra sugar and use cans of blueberry pie filling, but I find fresh fruit always tastes the best. The combination of lemon zest and fresh blueberries perfectly balances the sweetness of the cake mix, giving this dish a tangy, fresh flavor!

How Do I Make Lemon Blueberry Dump Cake?

To make Lemon Blueberry Dump Cake, start by preheating your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Spray a 9 x 13 baking dish with cooking spray and put two cups of blueberries at the bottom of the pan. Next, sprinkle the dry cake mix over the top of the berries and then drizzle melted butter over the top of the cake mix. Add the remaining cup of berries over this mixture, and sprinkle two tablespoons of sugar over this blueberry mixture. Finally, grate your remaining butter on the top and bake for 45 minutes or until the cake is bubbling and golden.

What Kind of Cake Mix Is Best?

You can use any lemon cake mix you like, but I always prefer the Duncan Hines cake mixes! I have always loved their yellow cake mix, chocolate cake mix, red velvet cake mix, and strawberry cake mix for making my bundt cakes. The lemon cake mix is just as delicious and doesn’t have an artificial lemon flavor.

How Long Does It Take to Make This Recipe?

From start to finish, the total time on this recipe is less than an hour. The prep time is under ten minutes, and the cook time is just 45 minutes! You can truly throw this together in no time and prep the rest of your meal or do a few household chores while the dump cake cooks! This is one of those fabulous, easy recipes you will be making all summer long!

Is Dump Cake Supposed to Be Gooey?

Because dump cake is a mix between a cake and a cobbler, it is definitely on the softer, gooier side. It does not cut into “clean” slices like a traditional cake but is served by scooping out portions like you would a cobbler. As long as you follow the instructions and bake it until golden brown and bubbly, you can rest easy knowing your cake is fully cooked!

How Should I Serve Lemon Blueberry Dump Cake?

Dump Cakes are best served warm and straight from the oven! I love to serve this recipe with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and maybe a little extra lemon zest for a garnish. If you’d like, you can cover the cake and reheat it to serve later. I would recommend heating it in the oven if you are planning to reheat it and serve to a crowd. If you just want to reheat a single serving, just scoop out a portion and pop it in the microwave for a few seconds!

I hope you enjoy this easy and delicious summertime dessert as much as I do! As always, thank you so much for stopping by. Be blessed, and stay savvy!
