The Career Traits Employers Look for (and How to Build Them at Any Age)

In this episode, I sit down with my husband, Zane, for a candid conversation about what employers are truly looking for and what separates good employees from excellent ones. As an experienced investment banker and entrepreneur, Zane brings years of hands-on experience hiring and evaluating talent, and he’s passionate about passing these insights on to the next generation.

While this career advice is especially valuable for young adults, it’s also incredibly relevant for anyone in midlife who’s guiding kids or grandkids or reflecting on their own career path. Whether you’re mentoring someone else or wanting to stay intellectually curious and relevant in your own career, this episode offers practical, timeless insights that apply at any stage of life.

The 9 Traits Employers Are Looking For:

  1. Coachability: Are you open to feedback, and more importantly, can you apply it and improve? Employers value people who are teachable, adaptable, and willing to grow.
  2. Strong Work Ethic: Are you simply checking boxes, or are you going above and beyond? Great employees look for ways to add value.
  3. Ownership & Accountability: Do you take responsibility for mistakes, or make excuses? Humility and accountability build trust and set strong professionals apart.
  4. Curiosity & Willingness to Learn: Employers want people who are intellectually curious and constantly looking for ways to improve, evolve, and stay relevant.
  5. Positive Attitude: A positive mindset goes a long way, especially in team-based and customer-facing roles. Attitude often matters just as much as skill.
  6. Ability to Handle Stress: Strong performers find healthy ways to manage stress rather than letting it take over.
  7. Clear Communication (and Confirming Understanding): Poor communication is one of the biggest frustrations in the workplace. Clear, thoughtful communication and making sure everyone is aligned is essential.
  8. Team Mindset: You can only go so far alone. Long-term success requires collaboration, shared goals, and a willingness to support the team as a whole.
  9. Initiative: Are you anticipating the needs of the business and your team? Employers notice people who take action, solve problems, and don’t wait to be told what to do.
