A Healthier Fall Dessert
If you’re looking for a guilt-free dessert you can enjoy anytime, this is the perfect recipe for you! Enjoy a taste of fall flavors without all the calories or carbs of apple pie or apple cobbler.
What Kind of Apples Should I Use?
Granny Smith apples are always my go-to cooking apple because I find they are firm and hold their “heft” even when cooked down! While you could also use a Honeycrisp or Gala, I find that the tartness of a Granny Smith perfectly balances the sweetness of the brown sugar and maple syrup in this recipe. To keep the apples from turning brown, I coat the slices in lemon juice and keep them in a Ziploc bag.
What Ingredients Are In This Recipe?
This might be the easiest fall dessert ever! You only need four main ingredients (and the rest you probably already have in your pantry):
- 3 Granny Smith apples, peeled, cored, and sliced
- 1/4 cup dark brown sugar
- 3 tablespoons of butter
- 1-2 tablespoons of maple syrup
- 1 heaping teaspoon of cinnamon
- Dash of salt
- 2 tablespoons of cornstarch (Optional- Use this to thicken the apple mixture if you prefer a thicker texture.)
How Do I Make These Stovetop Cinnamon Apples?
Start by peeling, coring, and slicing your apples. If you want the apples to stay in tact after cooking rather than forming a sort of “apple sauce,” then cut thicker slices. Next, melt three tablespoons of butter in a skillet over medium heat. Coat the apples in the melted butter, and stir in your brown sugar and cinnamon. Feel free to add other fall spices you love like ginger, nutmeg, or cloves! Add a sprinkle of salt to bring out all the flavors.
Cover the apples with the lid to your skillet and let them soften over medium to medium high heat for about four minutes. If you want to thicken your apple mixture, make a cornstarch slurry by mixing together two tablespoons of cornstarch with two tablespoons of water in a small bowl. Pour this into your skillet and stir to combine. Finally, stir in a tablespoon of maple syrup and cook the apples to your desired consistency.
How Should I Serve Cinnamon Apples?
You can serve these on their own, with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, as a topping on your oatmeal, on top of pancakes or waffles, or even as an apple pie filling! For added protein, you can even serve them over Greek yogurt or cottage cheese. These cinnamon apples are delicious with practically anything!
